I think it speaks to how good they are at it that their games can engross you given their basic production values. they make some of the finest adventure games around. it's some of the most memorable stuff in all of games and it's yielded some great titles, but it seems lacking in something that it needs to modernize that it's yet to get.Ĭheck out Wadjet Eye, if you haven't. there definitely should be a dialogue to see what people like and don't like about the genre. I have a few ideas there from when I think about it from time to time, and I think everyone who plays an adventure could supply something there. one day somebody should maybe do a blog or something on the genre and try generate a discussion on what could be done to make it more palatable and deal with its downsides. I can always easily recall things from adventure games, and I can't say that for games in other genres that were way better. One thing about the adventure genre I find, is, oddly, that it's some of the most memorable among genres.

I really liked the Discworld games, so maybe you could check those out. I definitely think that the genre needs some updates to its controls and mechanics that it never got or found. I love the character that genre can have sometimes, as well as the humour that is in part its bread and butter, but when you stall, man do you stall. I don't seem to like it as much as I hope. Plus adding absolute paths here is helpful for launching the game from some other directory, like with the launcher.Yeah, I'm of the same mind when it comes to the adventure genre. Windows uses backslashes: \ while Linux uses slashes: /. What's changing are native paths that are mounted.

To avoid confusion - it's not about changing C and D, that's internal DosBox (DOS) syntax and it's right.

So we change mount C "." to use correct absolute path as well as imgmount d -t iso -fs iso ".\SC.dat". We'll have to modify that to use Linux filesystem syntax (instead of Windows one). Note that the second file mounts an iso image for the game (SC.dat) as a virtual disk "D", and mounts the game directory as a virtual disk "C". The first file appears to be general DosBox settings, while the second one is actually for launching the game. Look inside them - it's worth getting familiar with basic DosBox configuration in general. In this case you'll see: nf and dosboxSC_nf. Now take a look at provided DosBox configuration files. Let's say you saved the package in $HOME/Games/install/gog/strike_commander

innoextract 1.4 worked for me (but I had to compile it from source, since current Debian testing still ships 1.2 which produces errors for current GOG packages):

Unpack it with innoextract (no need to install it with Wine). You can use the handy Linux GOG downloader for that ().Ģ. First, get the package (in my case it was setup_strike_commander_2.0.0.5.exe).

So Linux users would need to perform some manual steps to play it using the native distro's DosBox (there surely is no point in running Windows DosBox through Wine).ġ. GOG packages DosBox with such DOS games, but targets Windows users. I just got a Strike Commander from GOG (), which is an old DOS game, so in order to play it one would use DosBox. I usually do this for DosBox games from GOG, but new Linux users might be unfamiliar with the procedure. May be this would be useful to someone who is new to Linux.
